Abby Sunderland has been found safe. The famous 16-year-old lone voyager and youngest American solo sailor went missing on controversial voyage. Sunderland was reportedly travelling in Indian Ocean as part of her journey around the world; all alone as the youngest person in the world. On Thursday June 10, the Californian girl lost contact with family while emergency beacon had been automatically activated.
It is really sad to know about brave teen Abigail “Abby” Sunderland that on a stormy day she continued travelling in the Indian Ocean and ultimately lost Satellite Phone contact with her family. Reports publishing in Associated Press further revealed that Abby Sunderland had been constantly in contact and kept informing that there was a storm developing while she sailed in the southern part of the Indian Ocean.
However, when the manually operated two numbers emergency radio signal providing beacons were observed activated; it alerted the people at the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and immediately, a rescue operation was advised. The last known position of Abby Sunderland remained Kerguelen Islands’ northeast while in west of Australia some 2000 miles.
The AMSA also arranged a passenger jet Qantas that was on its way immediately to the area where Sunderland possibly would be found. Further, there were as many as 11 air observers who are highly trained SES officers while an officer from FESA also accompanied the rescue team. Similarly, there were as many as three ships also sent in to search for the missing teen while from Reunion Island.
Meanwhile, one thing encouraged the AMSA people that there was no third emergency beacon activation which triggers when the sail boat drowns; and the device is underwater at least 15 feet deep. Sunderland had started her voyage from Marina Del Rey on January 23 this year and originally she planned to remain at sea for five months.
