A very recent announcement revealed that Boof Bosner has been acquired by the Boston Red Sox. 28-year-old Boof Bosner has been acquired in trade of a player whose identity has been held by Twins. He’s a player with lifetime record of 18-25 with a 5.12 ERA in 96 appearances with Twins.
John Paul Bonser who changed his name legally to Boof Bosner right after 2001 season, has been struggling with injuries in the past. Last season proved to be a nightmare for Bosner as he had to wait till the recovery from a damaged labrum and the right shoulder thus missed the whole season. While with Giants, he was regarded as one of the top pitching prospects when the Giants selected him in the first round of the 2000 draft.
Bosner was also involved in an asymmetrical trade in the history of league in 2003 that really surprised many; on November 14, A.J. Pierzynski Twins’ catcher, was traded on the cost of Francisco Liriano, Joe Nathan and Bonser. Now if we look back at his career, apart from his lifetime record, he hasn’t come up with something extravagant lately.
What exactly charmed the Boston Red Sox about Bosner is, apparently not very clear. His stats tell that most of the time, he gets hit off his pitches and during his three seasons with them, the Twins couldn’t have a better performance from Bosner. There are 5.12 ERA to his credit in 96 games alongside another serious problem; his lifetime hit average appears to be .286 with .326 BABIP in career.
However, it’s up to the Red Sox how they benefit from him and how the Boof Bosner comes up with their expectations from him. Lets wait and see.
