Disaster-hit Chile was again jolted on March 11, 2010 following an earthquake measuring to magnitude 7.2 thus prompting the Tsunami Warning Center to issue a tsunami warning afresh. However, the same was lifted after few hours while the residents shifted to safer places in Valparaiso, Chile. The aftershock didn’t cause any further damages either.
The rector scale readings showed it was a powerful aftershock that struck Chilean Valparaiso on Thursday and according to the details, the jerking lasted for nearly 45 seconds. The authorities further informed that at least three more aftershocks followed while in the next just 25 minutes and the local residents immediately evacuated their homes and rushed towards the safer places.
Following the first powerful quake i.e. magnitude 7.2, the Chilean government issued a tsunami alert thus frightening the people a bit more. However, the warning for a tsunami expired within next couple of hours and the warning centers announced the danger was over. The aftershocks that followed later were not that fierce in nature and there were no reports on any further damage done in any of the areas struck by the fresh earthquakes.
The reports issued by the seismic centers revealed that the epicenter of the fresh aftershocks was some 150 km in the south of Santiago the Chilean capital in the city of Rancagua. The authorities further informed that this was among the biggest aftershocks following the February 27 devastating 8.8 magnitude shocker that toppled whole Chile and dozens of nearby islands.
The main earthquake had claimed more than 1,000 lives in Chile alone and loss of property was beyond millions of dollars worth. However, there were no injuries or casualties reported resulting off fresh jerks.
