The beautiful American fashion model of late 1970s, Gia Marie Carangi was born on 29 January, 1960 and in 1986 at the age of only 26 years, Gia was no more. Somehow, an infected needle caused Gia Marie contract AIDS. Gia was the daughter of an Italian- American father and American mother with Irish-Welsh ancestry.
There is no doubt that Gia Marie Carangi was rated as a first ‘Supermodel’ at her times although later, Janice Dickinson, Dorian Leigh and Cindy Crawford also got the title. Coincidently, Cindy Crawford had so much resemblance with Gia Marie that it earned her the title of “Baby Gia.”
Various fashion magazines have acknowledged the modeling talent of Carangi and paid full tribute to the model by featuring her as their Cover Girl on countless occasions. Within a span of just 4 years (1979 – 1981), several issues of Vogue, Vogue Paris, American Vogue, Italian Vogue, and Cosmopolitan had her covered from almost every angle.
Unfortunately the habit of drug addiction brought an early end to the vast career of Carangi who had years of success ahead. She was addicted to ‘Heroin’ that extremely affected her in terms of loosing her beauty and charm as a model and later; she became the victim of AIDS courtesy an infected needle. It’s not known what the reason was, but her death news did not publicized.
Angelina Jolie who has an identity of her own, starred in a 1998 movie at the age of 23 years that covered the true story of Gia and her performance earned her a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and Emmy nomination. The same is being re-released on HBO on public demand. The writer and director of the movie is Michael Cristofer.
