Based in the eastern L.A. college town of Claremont, Harvey Mudd College is a liberal arts college of Mathematics, Engineering and Science. It was established more than half a century ago in the annum 1955 and is part of five contiguous colleges which lie within close range of each other. The five colleges are referred to as the Claremont colleges and cover a total land space area of one square mile.
The Harvey Mudd College has been named after Harvey Seeley Mudd, an engineer in mining who died the year the Harvey Mudd College was established as a college. Mudd was involved greatly in the planning of the college but wasn’t fortunate to live long enough to witness its opening. The project was then carried on by Harvey’s friends and family and was then named after Harvey as a sign of honor and respect.
The liberating aspect about the Harvey Mudd College is that the student may select the option of choosing his own main courses which may be an assortment of Chemistry, Physics, Engineering and Biology apart from having the choice of mixing interdisciplinary courses such as the course of mathematical biology.
The Harvey Mudd College holds an amazing percentage of its students who gain a PhD and is ranked second in the list of colleges to produce the most PhD’s in the nation while Caltech hold the first position and MIT the second when it comes to the field of science and engineering.
According to the U.S News and World report the Harvey Mudd College is ranked number fourteen for having the best undergraduate engineering degree program for a college that offers maximum education to the master’s level.
