A high school graduate Michelle Mack was born with half brain. Her left hemisphere was destroyed in her mother’s womb yet 37-year-old Michelle Mack is living an ambitious and full life. Michelle Mack recovered from her pre-birth stroke loss at the age 27, miraculously.
The doctors were astonished to discover a miraculous recovery to their patient when she was 27-year-old. Michelle Mark can speak just like us, she has graduated from a high school, she’s very much fond of dating and she’s doing almost everything that a normal person can do. So what’s so special about her then? She was unable to do any of the above tasks ten years back.
Well if the doctors or scientists believe we use only 10% of our brain then what’s the theory about Michelle who suffered a stroke when she didn’t even know the word stroke as she was in the womb of her mother. The stroke caused her a severe loss; the poor girl was born with half her brain. Subsequently to the disappointment of Mack’s parents Carol and Wally, there was something wrong with their beloved daughter that was evident at a very young age.
Carol Mack was of the opinion that her daughter Mack certainly didn’t have a Down’s syndrome rather something else that slowly but showily started to affect Mack’s life very adversely and her childhood and growing years were badly weighed down with ever-increasing frustration for both Mack and her parents.
Ultimately the problem was solved when some10 years back, Cognitive Neuroscience Section chief Dr. Jordan Grafman diagnosed through an MRI scan; Mack was living without nearly half of the left side of what we call a brain! Briefly it can be described as if 95 % of the cortex and some of the movement, behavior, and cognition controlling structures were missing. It was yet another shock for the family as well as the doctors.
Then how Mack was capable of doing whatever she could with her ‘limitations?’ Dr. Grafman had only one answer to the query; Mack’s brain somehow rewired itself. Few of the essential functions such as speaking, reading and thinking etc would have been taken over by the remaining half with the passage of time automatically.
At the age of 37, Mack has started living quite a normal life and now she’s got fairly normal basic language abilities, follows the instructions, can create small sentences and she has an ever-increasing vocabulary too. But then again, she’s some limitations as well. However, last 10 years or so have proved productive for her though the recovery is not perfect, according to the doctors.
