At biggest forum such as 2010 Oscars, the ‘Music by Prudence’ documentary beats ‘The Last Truck,’ an American labor tragedy as well as several other strong competitors. The director Roger Ross Williams couldn’t believe his ears when called onstage to receive the honor on March 7, 2010.

Tale of a 21-year-old disabled Zimbabwean band member namely Prudence Mabhena that has seven other teammates disabled as well, had been dubbed as ‘Music by Prudence’ and the same was considered worth an Oscar at the 82nd Award ceremony of Annual Academy Awards on Sunday night.

Directed by Roger Ross Williams ‘Music by Prudence’ mainly focuses on the struggles faced by as many as eight disabled band members that are successfully fighting and transcending chauvinism using their skills through fellowship and art. These handicaps are running Liyana an Afro-fusion marimba assembly that was badly stigmatized in the beginning.

Mabhena is the patient of arthrogryposis thus deprived off both legs whereas other members that joined Mabhena at the Physically Disabled Children’s School & Centre King George VI based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, were kind of ‘family burdens’. Working together, all the children found out a way to express themselves through Liyana and finally on March 7, their tale documented under the above mentioned title; earned the director and the band an honor they could only dream of.

It has been learned that Institute College of Art, Maryland partially contributed the creative as well as financial support to make the project a success and finally when it beat the strong nominees on Sunday night, it prompted Rogers to express his surprised happiness thus he made a brief speech (that could last little longer had the producer Elinor Burkett not interrupted) and stated:

“This is amazing moment for me and two years back it was beyond imagination for me to even think I would end up here when I was flying back home to Zimbabwe.” The producer further stated that the award and honor is for Prudence.”
