The name of the Newbery Award Winner of 2010 reportedly leaked and announced on a Twitter Account. At Boston the American Library Association known as ALA was surprised to see Rebecca Stead’s name as winner even before they made an official announcement.

Reportedly it was an unidentified person that released Rebecca’s name on his Twitter page (at Random House) while the official announcement was due some 17 minutes later. This smart move really surprised ALA officials at their midwinter gathering and it’s being considered the news of the morning since it surfaced on the Web blog.

However, according to the official announcement, the 2010 Newbery Award alongside Caldecott Medal go to Rebecca Stead and Jerry Pinkney for “When You Reach Me” and The Lion & the Mouse (Little, Brown), respectively. ALA made the results public at 8:38 in the morning while the leaked information on official results already reached lot many people well before that.

According to the reports Adrienne Waintraub was reached at Random House via an email regarding the issue to which; he responded with a thanks and stated ‘we took it down since we saw the same.’ Then there was Libba Bray whose ‘Going Bovine’ earned her the Michael L. Printz Award. Claudette Colvin: ‘Twice Toward Justice’ by Phillip Hoose was considered among Newbery’s four honor books.

The other three books were The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate (Holt), Little, Brown and Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Jacqueline Kelly, Grace Lin and Rodman Philbrick, respectively. Two more books i.e. All the World (Beach Lane Bks.) and Red Sings from Treetops: A Year in Colors (Houghton) were considered Caldecott Honor Books by ALA. The writers and the illustrators for the same were Marla Frazee – Liz Garton Scanlon and Pamela Zagarenski – Joyce Sidman.
