The US East Coast is under a driving snowstorm this week. Heavy snowfall just paralyzed the holiday shoppers in Baltimore and Washington with one week to go for the Christmas. The National Weather Service had already issued a warning for severe blizzard with 22 inches of snow on Saturday.
The streets and rooftops of the East Coast over the miles seem to be covered with a giant white sheet as its snow and snow everywhere. Wind gusts of nearly 40 m/h or even more have made the things more difficult for the local residents who wished to shop for Christmas. This is the heaviest and worst snowstorm since 2003 in the East Coast and the as per the NWS weather forecast, it may still dump the vicinity under more snow within the next few hours.
The District of Columbia is under heavy snow as well and according to the reports, a snow emergency has already been declared for the district by Adrian Fenty, the Washington Mayor. The residents of the whole district were issued an advice by the city management to take shelter in their homes and avoid traveling as the storm was feared to worsen.
Foreseeing a troubled day ahead, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) was forced to cancel a number of flights though till 10 a.m., most of the Washington area Airports remained operative. The major problem for conducting the flights is always the poor visibility in such weather therefore; plenty of airlines had announced the cancellation of flights even on Friday.
There were reports of hours-long delayed flights at the Philadelphia International Airport due to the snowstorm and though the train service was not affected till almost half the day Saturday, it was possible that the Amtrak may seize the operation if the storm continued to stay in the state. The Virginia governor also declared his area under the state of emergency. The storm’s trend suggests that New York City and a large part of Philadelphia would be next with snow up to 8 or even 12 inches.
